Better uses for your thumb

Signalling OK;

Releasing a muscle knot;

Clicking a Bic;

Measuring the distance between your big toe
and the end of a new shoe;

Opening a CD case;

Identifying yourself;

Pulling a plum from a pie;

Pressing your closed eyelids against your eyes
until you see stars—

anything but galloping
across the endless wasteland
of social network updates.

The trees are still

against the blue and gold
gradient of the sky.

The moon’s fine arc hangs
among a few lonely stars

while all across Green Bay
the birds say good morning to each other.

This is my favourite part of the day.
